â This is crazy. How could this be?â I wondered now doubting my sanity as continued on.
As I got closer to my destination I could see the glow of light. Who or whatever it was couldnât see without the light and the darkness would be an advantage to me.
When I got to the source of both the scent and the light, I carefully peeked into the room to my left. It was much larger than the one I woke up in, and had more furniture: a desk, small table and two wooden chairs.
There were books and bowls on shelves on the far wall. Cups and plates on the table that also held a lantern, oil by the smell.
The scent was coming from an opening to my right. I had to see. Maybe they would help me, but I wasnât about to call out until I knew what or who I was dealing with.
Quietly I crossed the room, my bare feet silent on the floor. Once I reached the open doorway I stopped and looked through.
I saw a man facing away from me. I could see that he had long dark hair that reached halfway down the back of his simple brown robe. He was standing in front of what looked like a wash stand.
âWhat have you gotten me into? Iâve told you hundreds of times I will not be a part of any of this. Now leave me be. I came here to get away from your world. Iâll not be drawn back into it by you! What do you mean I have no choice now? Sheâs here; whoâs here, what have you done?â
âI think they mean me,â I said softly trying not to startle him too much.
He whirled around with a start and his hand flew to his chest.
âGood Lord. How did you get here, who are you?â he said trying to see me better.
He looked young; I was surprised by that, although I donât know why. He had a long dark beard to match his hair, he was about six feet tall and his simple brown robe was tied with a cord at his waist. His piercing blue eyes were wide with shock.
âIâm sorry; I didnât mean to frighten you. I donât know how I got here or why. My name is Katrina. I woke up in a small room down the corridor. Can you help me get home?â
âWhereâs home, Katrina?â
âMormont; in Germany, but anywhere above ground would be fine I suppose.â
âI have to sit down,â he said looking wildly around.
There was a small bed similar to the one I woke up on close by. He walked over to it and sat on the edge; put his head in his hands and said to himself.
âThis canât be my destinyâ¦.I could still refuse.â
Then he looked up at me. When he did, the expression on his face changed.
âWhat else do they call you, Katrina?â
At first I didnât understand what he meant. Trust your instinct I told myself.
âProtector of the races,â I said confidently standing up tall.
